Roland Stelzer finished his studies at HTL Leonding (Higher Technical School for Computer Science and Business Management, Upper Austria) in 1996. In 2003 he obtained a first class honours degree in Computer Science at the University of Derby (UK). Since 2004 he studies for a Ph.D. at the Centre for Computational Intelligence at De Montfort University in Leicester (UK). As part of the Research Group for Intelligent Mobile Robots and Creative Computing he works on the optimisation of sailing routes using artificial intelligence techniques.

Furthermore Roland Stelzer is president and founder member of InnoC.at, the Austrian Association for Innovative Compter Science. Within the framework of InnoC.at he organises the RobotChallenge annually. This is Autria's biggest international competition for autonomous, mobile robots.

Among his educational career Roland Stelzer worked as a freelancer in software development and IT consulting from 1994 to 1997. Afterwards he was in charge of the network an server infrastructure and at the University of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten (Lower Austria). Additionally he was responsible for the University's project management. Since 2000 he works as SAP system manager and project consultant at the Federal Computing Centre (BRZ GmbH) in Vienna. Furthermore Roland Stelzer is lecturer for Operating Systems and Networking at University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien (Vienna, Austria) since 2007.
